ISAM 101 Workshop: Design, Build, and Manage a Makerspace 

Date: Wednesday 11 September 2024
Time: 9am – 12pm, to include breakfast (from 8am in the Moonscape of the Diamond building)
Location:  Lecture Theatre 8, The Diamond building, The University of Sheffield

Description: Thought leaders and practitioners from the Higher Education Makerspace Initiative will cover fundamental principles of successful makerspaces such as:

  • Understanding the general types and their pros/cons
  • The importance of culture and community
  • Assessing impact/justification
  • Staffing and training models
  • Optimizing access while minimizing boundaries
  • Creating effective safety systems
  • Understanding safety and complementary policy, insurance, legal and regulatory issues
  • Q&A session open to audience inquiries on applying the presented information to unique circumstances

ISAM 102 Workshop: Makerspace Equipment for Prototyping 

Date: Wednesday 11 September 2024
Time: 1pm – 4pm, with lunch (from 12pm)
Location Lunch:  The Moonscape, The Diamond building, The University of Sheffield
Location Workshop: Computer Room 3, The Diamond building, The University of Sheffield

Description: This workshop will consist of two main sections.

  • Participants will spend some time in the iForge makerspace with the students who run it, where they will learn about what it’s like to be part of a student-led makerspace and how to build a maker community.
  • Participants will engage in a hands-on building activity that illustrates uses of equipment commonly found in academic makerspaces, such as laser cutters and 3d printers. A pedagogical view will be taken to provide steps through the planning, design, and teaching aspects of a physical computing system.

HEMI members, conference organizers, student leaders, and/or industry representatives will host.
